Project BioSMe "Plants as a source of bioactive sulphur compounds and their ability to hyperaccumulate metals" is funded by the Croatian Science Foundation under number  IP-2016-06-1316.

      MAIN SCIENTIFIC OBJECTIVES:

  • to identify well-suited sources of organic sulphur compounds (specifically glucosinolates, isothiocyanates, thiosulphinates, disulphides, and other) using different methods of isolation;

  • to synthesize sulphur compounds (specifically isothiocyanates) finding best methodology with the highest yield of the selected target structures;

  • to explore further the diversified biological potential of organic sulphur compounds enriched extracts and pure compounds and their structure activity relationship;

  • to investigate the stability and the bioaccessibility of selected enriched sulphur extracts and pure compounds (intact GLs, ITCs and other), under conditions of simulated digestion process using human digestive enzymes and human gut microbiota;

  • to identify plants as possible hypperaccumulators of (non)metals (specifically Se, Ni, Pb, etc.) underlying mechanisms in their biosynthesis.
